The news of the release of the 2011 La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904 reached my desk a few days ago and I can finally take some time to offer this wine to you. I was exceedingly positive and excited about the superb, seductive 2009 and the exceptional 2010 releases, and with good reason. The 2011 completes a trio of fabulous vintages for this cuvée, which is only released when the quality of the wine is deserving of its stellar reputation.
Is that the case with 2011? A-B-S-O-L-U-T-E-L-Y. The Rioja Consejo Regulador are very parsimonious when it comes to handing out their top rating of Excellent to a crop; indeed 2011 is only the 8th year to be awarded this rating in the past half a century (and the 14th in 86 years)!

The Gran Reserva 904 is one of those bottlings one should never ignore. Sandwiched between the blue chip claret-beating 890 and the mind-blowing value for money offered by Viña Ardanza, 904 offers the best of both worlds, from a bodega producing: "Great Rioja, as traditional as it gets, in good quantity and moderate prices." - Luis Gutiérrez, RobertParker.com
Apart from the wonderful drinking pleasure this wine delivers when mature, it is also a very sound wine investment. According to Livex, "In 2019, the Rioja Alta 904 2009 was the 5th most traded wine from Spain and the 2010 is currently the most traded Spanish wine of 2020, making up 22% of trade by volume for the region."
The next 904 we can expect to be released will be the 2015, not until 2023 at the earliest so in my opinion this is a complete no-brainer, and I thoroughly recommend you fill your boots now, before the inevitable rush that will come with high critics scores being published.

Where possible, we will use the existing packaging the wine is shipped to us in from the producer. If we feel this is unfit, we will re-pack in a Mr.Wheeler branded, recyclable cardboard carton.
