Why Château du Raux?
A mature Haut-Médoc from the outstanding 2016 vintage, Château du Raux is classic claret at its most rewarding and most affordable. From gravel soils just moments from Saint-Julien, it delivers all the hallmarks of the appellation: soft, mellow structure, cassis-rich fruit and that tell-tale cedar spice. Family-owned for over 150 years and consistently overdelivering on value, this is a Petit Château in name only so much so that Château Ducru-Beaucaillou snapped up part of the vineyard after tasting the 2016. Drinking beautifully now, with years still ahead, its exactly the kind of under-the-radar Bordeaux that savvy buyers seek out.
Tasting Note
Aromas of dark currant coulis, spice and star anise unfold with hints of leather and oak. The palate balances ripe dark berries and cherry with a sweet, smoky spice, framed by fine tannins. The finish is long and complex, revealing savoury leather, cedar and a distinctive graphite edge.
A natural partner to classic, hearty dishes: roast lamb, beef rib or duck breast, while its mellow tannins and savoury edge also suit mushroom-based dishes, slow-cooked stews and mature hard cheeses. A versatile claret that comes into its own at the table.
