The 2010 Viña Ardanza Reserva Especial is not only a sublime wine that will deliver amazing drinking pleasure for the next couple of decades, it has got to be one of the very best value for money fine wines currently available in the world. A perennial trade favourite year in, year out for this very reason, but like the only 3 previous vintages elevated to the 'Selección Especial' status ('64, '73 and '01), the 2010 is on a whole other level.
This classic blend of Tempranillo and Garnacha grown in altitude on barren, free-draining soils made up with large pudding-stones similar to Châteauneuf-du-Pape delivers superb structure, aromatic expression in a wonderfully harmonious package. The balance is pitch-perfect thanks to the 3 years maturation in American oak and suppleness of tannins is ensured by the use of traditional racking by candlelight.
Delicious now yet it will age for another 15-20 years happily, the Viña Ardanza 2010 is a must-have, and if what happened to the 2001 is anything to go by, securing a couple of cases en primeur will pay dividends, when this disappears off retail shelves!
"2010 was a great vintage in Rioja in general and seems to be exceptional here, with a 2010 Viña Ardanza Selección Especial (what used to be Reserva Especial) that can challenge any of the recent vintages and hopefully can develop in bottle to reach the heights of years like 1973 or 1964. The wine is expressive, aromatic, very elegant and clean, with classical Rioja aromas of long aging in barrel and slow oxidation through the years in wood. The palate is polished and sleek but shows plenty of energy, with very fine, mostly resolved tannins and very good harmony and persistence. There is great complexity, and you could start smelling spice and smoke to move to earthy tones, hints of beef blood, cherries in liqueur, curry, diesel, old furniture and forest floor. A great Viña Ardanza!"

Medium body, fine-grained and very silky tannins for a wine of almost 10 years of age, bright and transparent acidity and a long, very spicy finish. Where possible, we will use the existing packaging the wine is shipped to us in from the producer. If we feel this is unfit, we will re-pack in a Mr.Wheeler branded, recyclable cardboard carton.
