2018 Pinot Noir, Esk Valley, Marlborough
2018 Pinot Noir, Esk Valley, Marlborough
And so amazingly we find ourselves in Autumn once more. Today is officially the first day of the new season and I think a transitional wine is exactly what’s required. Having travelled to London this weekend in shorts only to find that an umbrella would have been a wiser choice, a wine that’s equally at home on a sunny afternoon and a chilly dark evening such as this Pinot Noir Esk Valley is certainly the go-to savvy choice right now.
Those familiar with the Yorkshire moors may already be aware of the beautiful glacial formed Esk Valley which meanders its way down to Whitby. If you travel 11,000 miles away, you will find a fabulous New Zealand winery with the same name, a rising star making some of the best value pinot noirs around. Those in the know have been enjoying the extra dimension New Zealand pinots offer, especially when compared to Burgundy, as well as the extra freshness. Esk Valley’s 2018 vintage is comforting enough to see you through the gloomier days as well as being sprightly enough to even serve slightly chilled when the sun comes bursting through.

Tasting note:
This is a lovely pinot packed with red and black fruits with subtle notes of cedar and spice from a 12-month period of oak. It is very well balanced with an underlying acidity which makes it ideal with food. Drink: now - 2023.
Critic reviews:
"The 2018 Esk Valley Pinot Noir is drawn from vineyards in the Awatere and Wairau Valleys in Marlborough in NZs South Island. Aged for 11 months in French oak, it's soft, silky and although full of ripe dark cherry fruit has an appetisingly savoury finish."
