Best French Wine FAQs

  • What is the best French wine?

Our best-selling french wine is the 2024 Mâcon Uchizy, Domaine Talmard. This unoaked Chardonnay from southern Burgundy offers flavours of citrus, melon, peach and tropical fruit. Fermented slowly in stainless steel, it retains fresh acidity and a chalky minerality that gives structure and depth. The result is a clean, fruit-forward wine with a lingering finish. Although Burgundy accounts for just 5% of France’s vineyard area, Benjamin and Mallory Talmard capture the region’s purity and precision beautifully in this wine.

  • What is the most popular red in France?

The most popular red wine in France is Bordeaux, a powerhouse in France for its flavourful red wines and centuries-old vineyards. On the Left Bank of the Garonne River, Cabernet Sauvignon dominates. Grown in gravelly soils, it produces wines with rich aromas of blackcurrant, black cherry, pencil shavings, baking spices and mint. Meanwhile, the Right Bank features more Merlot-based wines, known for their smooth, velvety character.

  • What is the difference between Bordeaux and Burgundy wines?

Burgundy and Bordeaux are two of France’s most famous wine regions and they produce very different styles of wine. This is mainly because of the climate and grape varieties grown in each area. Burgundy is located in northern France and has a cooler climate, which is ideal for early-ripening grapes such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The wines are typically lighter, elegant and refined. Bordeaux, on the other hand, is further south with a warmer climate, influenced by the Garonne River and the nearby Atlantic Ocean. The region is ideal for grapes that need a longer, warmer growing season, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
