"...a reminder of just how well made they are. From the marly limestone of the southernmost vineyards of the Mâconnais, it’s aged for six months on the lees – partially in barrel – and is full of honeyed almonds, peaches and pears, with just a teasing hint of spice on the finish."
Jonathan Ray, The Spectator Magazine (tasted in October 2025).
The Mâconnais is one of my favourite buying visits, and responsible for some of the best-value white burgundies around. Its a beautiful region, and exceptional cuvées can be found here at a fraction of the price of chardonnays further north in the Côte dOr.
One such is the delicious Saint-Véran les Ombrelles from the ever-reliable cellars of Maison Loron. It's a wine that punches well above its weight, bringing us luscious citrus and stone fruit flavours with profound ripeness in perfect harmony with impressive poise and texture. A classy burgundy indeed tasted blind, this could be a good Pouilly-Fuissé.

classy wine, good balance, characteristic, fair price.
