El Salvaje Malbec 2016, Casa de Uco, Uco Valley

"The 2016 Casa de Uco ‘El Salvaje’ Malbec is stunning value. The label might be hideous but the wine is spot on, being a beautifully crafted, high-altitude Malbec from Mendoza. Violet-scented and full of vibrant, concentrated, deep, dark fruit and a gentle touch of oak, it’s perfect spring barbecue fare."
Jonathan Ray, The Spectator Magazine
Robert Parkers The Wine Advocate gave our flagship malbec 90 points high praise indeed for a wine under £15. El Salvaje is structured yet highly approachable, and combines a gorgeous core of dark fruit with lifted, floral notes. It bridges the gap between the exuberant fruit bombs one can sometimes find in Argentina, and the much more structured but sometimes a little reticent examples traditionally found in South West France. Grown at high altitudes in the Uco Valley, it has a touch of savoury, slightly meaty notes on the finish, in an elegant, harmonious yet complex package.
At 5 years old, the 2016 is at its peak and drinking brilliantly right now. The cool vintage conditions across Mendoza yielded a beautifully fresh, spicy and classically-structured red of brilliant energy that will be absolutely perfect with food the traditional 'Malbec and Steak' combination would work nicely of course, and El Salvaje would cope beautifully with chimichurri thanks to the brightness of its fruit and savoury style.
From the malbec capital of Argentina; Mendoza's Uco Valley, El Salvaje has the composure and depth of flavour that few producers in the region can obtain. It is more akin to Classed Growth Bordeaux! IWC Gold medal winner.
The 2016 El Salvaje Malbec should not be confused with the El Salvaje Malbec Orgánico, as this was fermented with 25% full clusters and matured in 10% oak barrels, so it has a more mainstream character (and I guess they have been increasing the "salvaje" character as they vinify new vintages). There's a little more ripeness here, and the wine is darker and a little more concentrated, still varietal and floral with more depth and better overall balance than previous years. It's juicy and reveals chalky tannins. 35,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in October 2018. 90 points, The Wine Advocate
"Spicy and aromatic, with the sort of aromas you find in the garrigue of the Languedoc, this is peppery, intense and refined with understated oak." 93 points, Tim Atkin
"This is an honest and clear example of Uco Valley Malbec" Decanter Magazine
"Deep crimson. Lively and very fresh on the nose. Savoury and appetising. Firm and structured. Very unlike most non-Argentines idea of Mendoza Malbec. Peppery. Sparky. Cool and fresh. Should be great with food.Long and GV. Drink 2019 2024; 16.5/20" - Jancis Robinson
