Nebbiolo red wine is grown in Barolo, Barbaresco and Alba in the northwest of Italy. It is notoriously difficult to cultivate to true ripeness, as it flowers early, ripens late, and struggles unless under specific conditions. However, when grown successfully, Nebbiolo rewards the grower’s efforts with powerful, full-bodied, and often described as “merciless” flavour profiles including cherry, raspberry and star anise.

What is Nebbiolo Wine?

Nebbiolo red wine is a red grape variety grown in hilly regions of Italy. This wine is named after the Italian word “nebbia”, meaning “fog”, a suitable title representing the foggy areas it's grown in. It’s highly acidic and dry and pairs well with slow braised meats and rich fatty foods like aged cheese.
What Does Nebbiolo Wine Taste Like?

Aged Nebbiolo wine is balanced and nuanced, with softened tannins and a complex combination of fruity and floral tones. This said; many consider Nebbiolo to also have tar-like and smoky flavouring, and aromas resembling anise. During cooler periods, Nebbiolo becomes more herbaceous, tasting slightly more sour than that produced in generally warmer years.
What Wine is Similar to Nebbiolo?

Nebbiolo is similar to Pinot Noir and Sangiovese. Both are a great alternative that shares many characteristics with Nebbiolo, including its expressive aroma and acidity. However, each harbours a slightly different flavour profile, which you might prefer. Pinot Noir also includes red fruits, similar to Nebbiolo, but can exhibit earthy tones like mushrooms. Sangiovese is also vibrantly acidic with tart cherries but incorporates an oregano and thyme infusion.
