During a prolonged period of change and instability, isn’t it nice to have a few things you know you can rely on? The quality of every vintage of Laudun rouge that comes out of Château Courac is exactly that. The 2017 has just landed and is certainly one of the best I’ve tried, a darker, meatier and all-round bolder vintage than 2016, packed with intense black fruit, blackcurrants, dark cherries all entwined with liquorice and black pepper spice.

The Côtes-du-Rhône-Villages appellation of Laudun continues to keep under the radar with neighbours Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas and Vacqueyras still much better known, but with that familiarity often comes higher prices; however, it is with the up and coming stars such as this that you really see the value often found in southern Rhône. Grenache is always at the heart of things in the south, and here it brings flavour in abundance and a boldness that is perfect to enjoy now, and also promises excellent ageing potential, should you wish to pop it away for a bit.

Critic review:
"This is one of the best Côtes du Rhône reds I have ever tasted full-flavoured with an elegance and purity that belies its humble appellation. Located in the relatively unknown Laudun district, it is made predominantly from the Grenache grape with a small amount of Syrah and Mourvèdre, which are also used in Châteauneuf-du-Pape; its grander and more expensive neighbour. The 2015 vintage is one of the most successful in the entire Rhône Valley and while it is in perfect form now, will certainly continue to improve for a few more years." (Previous vintage)

A lovely red wine full of flavour and body. It is effectively a chaeauneuf du paper at an everyday drinking price.
