"The 2016 Ch. du Raux is the perfect place to start. A so-called Petit Château of the Haut-Médoc that wasn't quite grand enough to be classified in 1855, it’s been in the hands of the Bernard family for the last 150 years and is as reliable as they come and always astoundingly good value with its textbook Cabernet-led blends. Soft, mellow and approachable, with plenty of blackcurrant and spicy cedar notes, it's a smile-inducing bargain".

Château du Raux 2016 from the Haut-Médoc is our latest, gorgeous, mature claret from this wonderful vintage. It is drinking beautifully now and will be for a good few years to come.

The Château is close to Saint-Julien with exactly the same, largely pebble terroir, such that the wine could well be mistaken as being from that appellation. In fact, so much so that Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, having tasted their 2016, bought a small parcel of their vineyard. It was that good!

Tasting Note

This is right in the sweet spot for drinking: at first, ripe blackcurrant and an appealing fruit coulis perfume on the nose with a swirl of the glass coaxing more mature and secondary aromas to emerge sweet, smoky spice and a note of cedar, perhaps. Classically claret, and quite Saint-Julien in style. On the palate, luscious texture, and fine balance. Pure, fresh cassis fruit, with nice richness and a sophisticated, polished feel to it. Nearly ten years of maturity gives this layers and layers of flavour. Some good winemaking at work here. Equal parts cabernet and merlot.
