2021 Gigondas, Domaine du Clos des Tourelles, Famille Perrin
Deep crimson-red core in the glass with a paling brim suggest a wine of both power and finesse. Take your time on the aromas, tightly bound initially but that will relent and deliver concentrated dark hedgerow fruit, violets and a hint of pencil shavings and subtle oak.
Dive in for a taste, initially, just for a moment, the fruit is masked by the grip, but an instant later and acai berry, wild raspberry, dark cherry and plum emerge. Every post-tasting breath releasing subtle notes of crushed black pepper, spice, warming cedar and a touch of dried herbs.
I love the slightly grainy tannic grip, given this is from the cooler 2021 vintage it's very nicely balanced with the fruit profile. Warmer vintages can, on occasion, be a little 'blousy' but not 2021, this is fine, taught and structured with a fabulous finish.
What a top glass of red, it's hard not to finish it once it has been poured, but if you can wait until chef serves up a rich, game-laden menu, you're in for a real treat!

Critic's View
Scented nose of blackberries, dark plums, dried thyme, bay leaves, black pepper and hints of undergrowth. Medium to full body with finely grained tannins. So velvety and poised with texture and harmony.
Lifted and well composed with a precise core of cherries and spices bringing vitality towards the developing finish. Drink or hold.
