An Introduction to Global Grapes

Article published Apr 16, 2026

Understanding wine grape varieties is one of the most rewarding steps you can take as a wine lover. Whether you're exploring a new bottle for yourself, searching for wine gifts for a special occasion or simply curious about what's in your glass, the grape is where every wine story begins.

At Mr. Wheeler Wine, we believe that knowing your grapes is the first means of identifying which wines and regions cater most strongly to your tastes. In turn, this ensures a more wholesome wine experience, every time.

There are thousands of wine grape varieties cultivated around the world, but a handful of popular wine grapes have risen to define the way most of us drink. These are the grapes that fill the shelves of great wine merchants, that appear on so many restaurant lists, and that form the foundation of some of the world's most celebrated bottles.

Let's explore the ones that matter most and why they're worth knowing.

What are The Best Red Wine Grapes?

Red wine grapes tend to dominate conversations about viticulture, and for good reason. The diversity and depth that these varieties offer, from light and fragrant to dark and powerful, is extraordinary.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is by far one the most widely recognised of all red wine grapes. Born in the Bordeaux region of France (where traditionally, it is blended with Merlot, Cabernet Franc) Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon has since travelled the world to become a benchmark variety in California, South Africa, Australia, Argentina and beyond.

Its thick skins give wines of considerable structure, with high tannins, impressive depth and the capacity to age gracefully over many years. Classic tasting notes include blackcurrant, cedar, tobacco and dark plum.

Merlot

Merlot is often considered Cabernet Sauvignon's softer-spoken companion and yet it is no less complex for it. In fact, Merlot makes some of the most sought-after wines, think of Pomerol on the Right Bank of Bordeaux, where Merlot reigns supreme and produces wines of plush, velvety richness.

With lower tannins and a rounder mouthfeel, Merlot is one of the most approachable of all red wine grapes, making it an excellent choice for those new to exploring reds. Notes of ripe cherry, plum, chocolate and a subtle earthiness characterise this variety at its best.

Pinot Noir

Beyond these two heavyweights, the world of red wine grapes offers much more to discover. Pinot Noir, delicate and complex, is the backbone of great red Burgundy and thrives in cool climates such as New Zealand's Central Otago and California’s Sonoma Coast.

Syrah/ Shiraz

Syrah, known as Shiraz in Australia, brings power and spice, finding its finest expression in the Northern and Southern Rhône, Languedoc, California’s Santa Barbara County, Stellenbosch (South Africa) and in Australia’s Barossa Valley.

Malbec

Malbec, originally from the rather obscure Cahors appellation in France and an occasional bit-part player in Bordeaux blends, has found its most voluminous voice in Mendoza, Argentina, where it produces robust reds of considerable depth, richness, structure and length, which explains why Malbec has become the ever-iconic ‘steak’ wine.

What are The Best White Wine Grapes?

White wine grapes are every bit as varied and compelling as their red counterparts. From crisp to rich, the range of styles they produce is extraordinary, and they form the basis of some of the most elegant white wine gifts you could ever give or receive.

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is the world's most planted white wine grape and its versatility is the key to that success. In Burgundy, where it reaches its most celebrated expression, Chardonnay produces wines of extraordinary complexity. This could be from the lean, steely whites of Chablis to the opulent, buttery richness of Meursault.

It has also developed a global reputation in California’s Napa and Sonoma Counties.

Chardonnay adapts beautifully to a wide range of climates and winemaking approaches. Unoaked, it tends towards freshness and fruit, with notes of green apple and citrus, while barrel-aged examples develop layers of vanilla, toast and cream.

Few grapes offer such an expressive canvas, which is why Chardonnay remains the cornerstone of the world’s most sought-after white wines..

Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon Blanc is perhaps the most immediately recognisable of all white wine varieties, with a signature aromatic profile that announces itself in the glass. Crisp, vibrant and often intensely aromatic, it is the defining grape of the Loire Valley. Here, Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé remain its most prestigious appellations, producing elegant wines typically with grassy, flinty and grapefruity aromas and zippy acidity and pronounced minerality on the palate.

Elsewhere, Sauvignon Blanc has found a second home predominantly in New Zealand's Marlborough region, where it produces wines of a more opulent, exotic character.

Typical flavours include gooseberry, freshly cut grass, grapefruit, stone fruit, white pineapple and a characteristic mineral edge that makes it a wonderful partner to seafood, shellfish, smoked salmon and light chicken and fish dishes.

A well-chosen Sauvignon Blanc is always a welcome addition to any white wine gifts selection.

Riesling

Considered by many as the most ‘noble’ of white varietals, Riesling comes in any form a white wine can be made. From bone-dry to dessert-sweet, this native Central European grape offers typical flavours of green apple, citrus, and stone fruits, often complemented by floral, stone fruit and trademark ‘petrol’ aromas.

High acidity and inherent sugar levels constitute its ageing potential, by which it develops in the fullness of time intriguingly complex secondary and tertiary flavours.

Although its heartlands are Alsace, Germany and Austria, it also flourishes in parts of Australia, New Zealand, California, New York State, South Africa and Canada.

Chenin Blanc

Chenin Blanc is one of wine's most versatile and underappreciated grapes. Native to the Loire Valley, Chenin Blanc can produce everything from bone-dry and mineral to lusciously sweet.

It ages magnificently, developing honeyed notes of quince, beeswax, and toasted nuts over time. South Africa has become a second heartland for this variety, where it is often known locally as Steen, producing wines of impressive quality and remarkable value.

For anyone who has yet to explore Chenin Blanc in depth, it represents one of the most exciting journeys in the world of white wine.

How Grape Variety Shapes Every Wine You Drink

Understanding wine grape varieties isn't merely an academic exercise, it's practical knowledge that transforms how you choose and enjoy wine.

Once you know that Cabernet Sauvignon tends to be structured and age-worthy, you reach for it when you want something to cellar or to serve alongside a grand roast.

Once you know that Sauvignon Blanc is bright and aromatic, you pair it with goat's cheese or fresh fish without a second thought.

Riesling becomes your first thought when you want something that feels genuinely elegant and complex; Chenin Blanc, your choice for a wine that surprises with sheer zippiness and verve.

The same principle applies when selecting white wine gifts or red wine gifts for others. A bottle anchored to a great grape variety, sourced from an exceptional producer and chosen with care carries a story worth sharing.

At Mr. Wheeler Wine, every wine in our cellar has been personally tasted and selected by our expert team, meaning that when you shop with us, the hard work of finding those exceptional expressions of popular wine grapes has already been done.

Choosing Your Next Bottle

With so many wine grape varieties to explore, the question is often simply where to begin. Our advice: start with curiosity. Choose one grape you know well and explore a different region or producer. Then try one you've never encountered before, a Viognier from Condrieu, a Chenin Blanc from Savennières, or a Merlot from a small Pomerol estate. Let each bottle teach you something new.

Whether you're exploring something new, looking for wine gifts that will genuinely delight or simply searching for something exceptional to open this weekend, our team is here to help.

Browse our curated selection of wines by grape variety, and discover just how much character, history, and pleasure is contained within every bottle.

Choosing the right grape is just the beginning, the real joy is in the glass.
