"The 2006 Bodegas Urbina Rioja Reserva Especial got 94/100 from both Tim Atkin MW and Sarah Jane Evans MW and is indeed a cracker, produced from the estate’s oldest plots. A blend of Tempranillo and dashes of Mazuelo and Graciano, it’s aged in both oak and steel and is full of ripe, dark fruit, spice and touches of mushroomy forest floor."

Bodegas Urbina have produced a very classic Rioja from the excellent 2006 vintage that has since developed beautifully in the bottle. The nose has aromas of fine black fruits, black cherries, ripe plum, leather and tobacco notes, all perfectly integrated with the oak. The palate is round, silky and smooth, and has a voluptuous, sweet mid-section with delicious ripe berry and mature fruits. Refreshing acidity; elegant, complex, very classy.

“Vivid ruby-red. Highly perfumed aromas of red and blue fruit preserves, coconut, mocha and pungent flowers, plus a hint of pipe tobacco emerging with air. Sappy and broad on the palate, offering sweet cherry-vanilla, spicecake and cola flavors and a hint of smokiness. Closes smooth, spicy and long, with lingering smokiness and fine-grained tannins adding subtle grip. Aged for two years in American oak barrels.”
