PRODUCT REVIEWS

"... for a truly surprising piece of long-lived excellence, the Sumaridge Estate’s Epitome 2012, hailing from Upper Hemel-en-Aarde, stands out for its Old World-like ageability and filigreed aromatics. Few would be able to place it as a South African Syrah-Pinotage blend – let alone one harvested over a decade ago."
MoneyWeek, April 2024

The ultimate 'Cape blend' of 57% syrah and 43% pinotage, matured in the finest French oak for 18 months. This big, bold fruit-driven wine is simply stunning.

"A deep, rich colour in the glass with aromas of ripe, blackcurrant fruit, delicate spice and a warming hint of smoky oak, quite restrained and elegant reminiscent of fine, mature red wines of France's Rhône valley.

The palate is laden with ripe, dark-berry fruit; blackcurrant, mulberry and bell pepper spice initially dominating. Over time the blackcurrant evolves to include a hint of blueberry and a wave of warming, smoky-oak lingers on the finish. 10 years on from harvest the tannins have mellowed, there is still a grip on the finish but it is beautifully balanced with the flavours and overall structure.

This wine has seen a lovely evolution in the bottle over the past decade, which has allowed the depth and complexity of flavour to be fully revealed, a great glass of wine and excellent value." James Russell-Grant | Mr.Wheeler

Producer Information - Sumaridge Estate

Sumaridge Wine Estate, proudly owned by the Bellingham Turner family, lies gracefully between two imposing mountain ranges in the Western Cape’s Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley - aptly named “Heaven and Earth” - with commanding views stretching to Walker Bay on the Atlantic Ocean.

The cool maritime breezes are key to the elegance of the estate’s wines. The perfect marriage of exceptional location, climate and soil, coupled with expert wine crafting, gives birth to signature wines that are distinctively elegant, ample in body and complex in flavour.

Grape Variety - Syrah/Shiraz
Grape Variety - Syrah/Shiraz

Arguably the most fashionable red grape in the world, Syrah has long produced some of the world’s greatest wines. The Rhône Valley in France, is responsible for such great names as Côte Rôtie and Hermitage, whilst in Australia under the guise of Shiraz it produces the world famous wines of Penfolds Grange and Henschke's Hill of Grace.

Syrah is a warm climate grape but has still been grown successfully in most wine regions of the world, producing rich spicy wines with high acidity, tannin and colour. Although in the Northern Rhone and Barossa valley it is usually un blended elsewhere it is often blended successfully with the other southern French red varieties of Grenache and Cinsault and in the new world more commonly with Cabernet Sauvignon.
