Brut, Champagne Pierre Courtois
Brut, Champagne Pierre Courtois
Here's a find I made in the mid-1990s and apart from being my favourite champagne, it also knocks many Grandes Marques off their perches. A diplomat friend serving in the British Embassy in Paris at that time called me up to say that it was (and still is today) being used as their Embassy Champagne and that I should consider, subject to sampling, importing and adding it to our other great wines. Naturally, the decision was an easy one. From then onwards, I was importing Courtois right up until 2016, when Mr.Wheeler got involved.
Champagne Pierre Courtois is in the Vallée de la Marne where their vineyards just 9 hectares are situated around the quaint, suitably named village of Crouttes-Sur-Marne. Their cuvée is a typical blend of chardonnay, pinot noir and meunier, with pinot noir doing particularly well in the soils around the village. A blend making for such an elegant champagne, with its lovely mousse, mellow, biscuity, creamy complexity, and finely balanced fruit and acidity. All in all a champagne punching well above its weight.
With Champagne houses having increased their prices so swiftly over the past six months, Pierre Courtois looks an even greater deal. In other words, given the average market price for a bottle of Grande Marque fizz today, you can instead savour two bottles of Champagne Pierre Courtois. Heres an easy decision.
- Simon Wrightson, Mr.Wheeler.
A classic regional blend of all three permitted varieties, pinot noir, pinot meunier and chardonnay. The fine, persistent fizz releases delicate aromas of pear, quince and honeysuckle. The palate follows suit with flavours of baked apple, brioche and citrus notes with a delicate creamy finish. A genuinely terrific value champagne with no compromise in quality.
