Gamay Red Wine

Gamay red wine is made from this cool climate varietal planted almost exclusively in the Beaujolais region in France and accounts for almost all red wine production there. Given such growing conditions, this makes for fruity, light-bodied, elegant wines often reminiscent of pinot noir, whose typically high acidic content gives them an added vibrancy. To temper this acidity, however, gamay commonly undergoes a vinification process known as carbonic maceration by which uncrushed fruit is fermented in a sealed, carbon dioxide-rich state. Here, juice ferments whilst still in the grape, ultimately imparting a heightened fruitiness and low tannic content to a finished wine. A Gamay red wine that is often hugely quaffable, overly food-friendly and full of enticing aromas and flavors of violet, lilac, sour cherry, strawberry, pepper and earthy minerality.
