Vintage Claret 'Across the Ages' Wooden Mixed Case
One of the true joys of fine wine is pulling the cork on a great bottle when it is drinking perfectly. Bordeaux contains some of the most singular and forceful expressions of cabernet sauvignon and merlot to be found anywhere on the planet, yet it is so hard to get mature wines without having bought them En Primeur and stored them for years.
Step forward this most fantastic mixed case, curated for your immediate pleasure, showcasing a number of exceptional château releases from a range of excellent vintages. Plus, this mixed case also comes in a stylish wooden box to boot.
From the brilliant, structured and long-lived 2005 vintage comes the brilliant Château Haut-Bergey from Pessac-Leognan. Neighbour to Château Malartic-Lagravieres, its class now shining through at age 16. A name synonymous with the best of Bordeaux’s Left Bank, Pauillac’s super Classed Growth, Château Grand Puy Lacoste, needs little introduction. The vintage 2007, a touch lighter in the glass, offers a more rounded, lush expression of this “classic” claret.
Moving on to 2008 comes the second wine of Saint-Julien’s Château Ducru-Beaucaillou. Often mistaken as a second selection of grapes, it in fact hails from a specific vineyard plot within the famed Second Growth, and is drinking absolutely perfectly right now. A brief sojourn to Saint-Émilion on Bordeaux’s Right Bank in the showstopping 2009 vintage, Château Grand Mayne is bold and rich, showcasing the generosity and luxurious nature of merlot in this, the most desirable of years. Not wishing to be outshone, the classic 2009 Château Chasse-Spleen delivers like-for-like concentration, but with cassis laden cabernet sauvignon at its core.
Last but not least, we finish with a château delivering world-beating Saint-Estèphe. The Classed Growth Château Lafon-Rochet is on a roll, with the stunning 2010 achieving the highest ever score for the estate from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. Still relatively early in its evolution, make sure you give this wonderful wine a good few hours in the decanter to open up.
