2013 Grand Vin Pinot Noir, 'Clayvin Vineyard', Wheeler & Fromm, Marlborough
Private offer by James Russell-Grant
After 12 months in fine French oak barrels, and a further decade in bottle, hidden away in the cellars at the estate, this 2013 Clayvin offers the complexity and elegance that lovers of fine pinot noir will relish.
Upon pouring the colour in the glass is still so vibrant and pure with a delicate red-cherry core, and paling, brick-red brim hinting at its maturity.
As soon as you swirl the glass you're in no doubt that you have a fine glass of perfectly mature pinot noir before you. Spicy cherry fruit dominates initially, but time has brought with it a medley of complex tertiary aromas; tanned leather, spice, cedar, charred oak/cigar box which emerge with a little patience, still delicate just as they should be.
The palate leads with pure, primary fruit, red cherry progresses to raspberry and a spicy character and through to those slightly gamey, meaty nuances that are again a product of its lengthy slumber. A subtle touch of warming cedar and spice are balanced with a freshness that complements the moderate tannic grip on the finish,
A lovely example of fine pinot noir, elegant and complex with a desirable balance of bright fresh red fruit, tertiary flavours and good length to the finish, structured, precise delicate and seductive.
Lovely as a solo glass but surely deserving of a fine menu. Roasted game would be sublime, but serve this alongside any hearty roast with all the trimmings, and you're in for a treat.
General consensus in the office is that the 2013 still has a good amount of time ahead of it, easily another 4+ years of maturing, and drinking pleasure. But why wait? for me this is bang on right now.
