Its en primeur season in Bordeaux again, where the launch of the 2023 vintage is about to begin (and where, in fact, our fine-wine-desk colleagues were tasting just last week).

And as is routine, its where some of the finest wines in the world from the most sought-after communes like Margaux, Pauillac and Pomerol will take centre stage to bask in yet more international acclaim.

One Margaux superstar hitting the stage will be Château Giscours, whose grand vin is unfailingly superb. Every vintage. But as are many such wines, its one that is quite often beyond most of our budgets.

Those in the know, however, are aware that the same supreme winemaking skill behind such a prestigious cuvée is also put to work in the more affordable labels an estate will offer alongside.

As for the vintage, 2016 is exceptional. One whose fruit forward style quickly caught the eye of critics and consumers alike. And because it also promises a few more years of wonderful drinking pleasure ahead, its a vintage you really should stock up on.

"Now with five years under its belt, there's a gentle pink rim to the ruby colour and very attractive aromas of spiced plum compote, with some classy cedar and a depth of fruit. A very pleasing wine in the mouth too, lots of juicy plum and black cherry, firm tannins and keen cherry-skin acidity give enough bite and structure, against the suppleness of the fruit."
