2016 La Fleur de Pédesclaux, Pauillac
Upon pouring there's a real sense of elegance, both visually with its deep mahogany core and pale crimson rim, and aromatically with red berry, sweet cassis and herbaceous aromas.
The palate is quite charming and far from the full throttle, grippy reds typically associated with the region. Soft, fleshy merlot plays a lead role delivering and initial burst of sweet plum and red berry fruit which evolves into darker cassis, crushed herb and subtle notes of warming oak and eucalyptus.
Tannins are fine and soft, with a delicate grip teasing the palate alongside sweet redcurrant and spice which hang on the finish.
This really is a lovely glass of red, with an elegance and smoothness which offers much enjoyment as a stand alone glass, but one that will also deliver at the dining table.
An hour in the decanter is very well rewarded. Drink now - 2026.
