If autumn’s arrival and the heartier seasonal fare that comes with it call for heartier, spicier, fuller-bodied reds also, then it’s time for a renewed offer on Domain Sichel’s outstanding 2019 Altura 350. A grenache, carignan and syrah blend from the exclusive Vallée de Cucugnan in the Hautes Corbières region, here again is the sensational authenticity and value that the South of France continues to offer. But to savour these qualities as expressed by one of the world's great names in winemaking all for under £12 a bottle is to discover sumptuous, everyday drinking red you’ll stick with throughout the autumn and beyond.
Scenic splendour aside, the Vallée de Cucugnan features a perfect combination of Mediterranean climate, altitude (averaging 350m above sea level – hence ‘350’) and Atlantic influence for finding true terroir expression in traditional, southern French varietals. It’s why 30 years ago Peter Sichel was so compelled to take on these 20 hectares that make up the Domaine today.
After taking over management of the vineyards in 2019, Peter Sichel’s grandson Alex eponymously renamed the Domaine from the previous Château Trillol in honour of his grandfather (100 years old last month). He continues to fully dedicate himself to exploiting the true potential of this enchanting region, a dedication that offers rich rewards in the Altura 350: an expressive, crunchy nose of ripe fruit, blackcurrant and prunes. Elegance and suppleness characterize the palate with an abrupt jolt of fruit that melts into a round of aromas of jam, pepper and spices. A good many years of ageing ahead, too.

Where possible, we will use the existing packaging the wine is shipped to us in from the producer. If we feel this is unfit, we will re-pack in a Mr.Wheeler branded, recyclable cardboard carton.
