The year 2000 in Bordeaux was superlative. It was a vintage when spectacular, unbroken sunshine between July's intensity and the welcomed rains of September found cabernet and merlot vines redeemed, and fruit with optimum ripeness. When sunny weather resumed in October to round off a glorious vintage and render wines rich, ripe with great structure, depth, complexity and tannin.
When, in the hands of the legendary likes of St-Juliens Château Léoville-Barton, plus twenty-three patient years in the cellar, one finds an extremely serious, world-class bottle of claret in full drinking form. A bottle that can now be in your hands.
"This is a behemoth -- dense, highly extracted, very tannic, broodingly backward, with a dense purple color and very little evolution since it was bottled 8 years ago. Wonderfully sweet cedar and fruitcake notes are intermixed with hints of creme de cassis, licorice, and earthy forest floor. It is full-bodied and tannic, with everything in place, but like so many wines that come from Leoville Barton, it makes a mockery of many modern-day consumers wanting a wine for immediate gratification. Where possible, we will use the existing packaging the wine is shipped to us in from the producer. If we feel this is unfit, we will re-pack in a Mr.Wheeler branded, recyclable cardboard carton.
