The latest release of La Jasse's premium cuvée, the 'black label' is an absolute treat. 2015 was a very strong vintage in the Languedoc - some growers believe it is one of the very best of the last half-century - and the Tête de Cuvée is a great demonstration of what a winemaker of Bruno Le Breton's talent can do given such exceptional conditions to work with.

A particularly warm summer produced grapes of extraordinary ripeness, resulting in a wine of great generosity, depth and texture. Bruno's Tête de Cuvée is a careful selection of the very best barrels from his flagship Vieilles Vignes, and is made entirely from cabernet sauvignon - this is made very much in the style of a top Bordeaux Château from a warm vintage - it would certainly be a challenge to pick this 2015 out in a blind tasting of Pauillacs from the same vintage.

The nose manages to combine pronounced cassis and blackberry fruit with a perfumed, aromatic freshness, whilst 12 months maturation in barrique adds complexity, with aromas of cedar, woodsmoke and spice. Concentrated and full on the palate, with a bright, almost sweet note to the warm black fruits - plums and autumn berries, with layers of dark chocolate and roasted coffee. Very well-balanced, with finely-knit tannins and a long, rounded, classy finish. Enjoy now, decanted ideally, with a good steak, Mediterranean cuisine or mature hard cheeses, or cellar until 2028.

Producer Information - Domaine de la Jasse

Domaine de la Jasse is situated some 15 kilometres from Montpellier in the heart of the Languedoc, the most dynamic wine area of Mediterranean France. Its name comes from the shelter and shade, known in the local dialect as jasse, provided by the Domaine’s iconic Plane tree.

This tree, which is over a century old, has provided the inspiration for the La Jasse trademark and logo. Today La Jasse, one of the leading domaines in the region, is recognised for its innovation and advanced techniques. The area is well known for attracting highly talented winemakers such as Bruno Le Breton, who has won numerous top awards with his La Jasse wines. Like the makers of ‘Super Tuscan’ wines, Bruno has chosen not to follow the restrictions of the appellation regulations, choosing instead the freedom provided under Vin de Pays d’Oc rules. This allows him to fully concentrate on creating ‘Super Cuvées’ of the highest possible quality at exceptionally low prices.

Grape Variety - Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the best-travelled red varieties. You will find it in many of the hotter wine regions around the world, where most producers attempt to emulate, and they would say better, the wines of Bordeaux. Bordeaux, however, is where this variety calls home, especially the gravelly soils of the medoc and graves regions.

Growing Cabernet Sauvignon does not guarantee the production of a fine wine, as the variety struggles to ripen in all but the sunniest of climates. When it does ripen fully the depth of colour, intensity of flavour and tannic structure can be quite incredible. This combination gives the best wines a remarkable ability to age over the long term. It is not uncommon for a fine Cabernet Sauvignon to mature and develop for 20 years plus.

The clearest signal for how highly regarded this variety is amongst producers is the trend in recent years for producers in some of the higher profile regions of Italy and Spain to plant an ever increasing proportion of this grape. You need just take a look at Tuscany, a region famed for the production of indigenous Italian Sangiovese - in a line up of the greatest wines from this region today a high proportion would include Cabernet Sauvignon.

Do not, however, assume that all Cabernet Sauvignon is intense and ageworthy. In a number of southern French regions and many New World countries quantity is as important as quality and the yields are such that some of the intensity is diminished, and a far easier drinking, more everyday wine is produced. Chile, Agentina, USA and Australia are amongst the countries that have had the greatest success producing Cabernet Sauvignon to suit all budgets, and when it is ripe it is often absolutely delicious.
