Single Vineyard New Zealand Pinot Noir Mixed Case
Positively home from Burgundian home, New Zealand has become one of the worlds go-to regions for star pinot noir. As vine-age continues to grow, so too does the depth and definition in the resultant wines. Mr.Wheeler have selected a trio of divine single-vineyard Pinot Noirs from three excellent vintages for your enjoyment.
Hailing from one of the country's finest individual sites, the 2014 Grand Vin Pinot Noir 'Clayvin Vineyard' offers staggering depth and precision in the glass, and at age eight is really starting to deliver on all of its early promise, whilst there is more than a passing resemblance to the most perfumed of all Burgundies; Chambolle-Musigny.
The 2011 'Gum Emperor' Pinot Noir, Jackson Estate, also from a single vineyard Marlborough site, is a star wine in a cooler vintage, yet still delivers bold, rich cherry and wild strawberry flavours which have a decidedly Volnay feel.
Keeping with the Burgundian referencing, step forward one of the most highly awarded New Zealand wines of recent years, Escarpment Vineyards exceptional 2013 Te Rehua. Produced by Larry McKenna in the Martinborough region, this 2013 received staggeringly high scores from all and sundry, the most glowing of 96-97 points from Nick Stock at JamesSuckling.com. 2013 was a vintage unlike anything Martinborough had witnessed before, and this wine introduced a growing band of global pinot fans to the sheer potential held by more emerging regions of New Zealand.
This six-bottle mixed case contains two bottles each of:
2014 Grand Vin Pinot Noir 'Clayvin Vineyard', W&F, Marlborough
Clayvin Pinot Noir is made in the Burgundian way and is a wine that needs time to show its impressive pedigree and class. This is elegant and refined pinot noir from one of New Zealand's very best sites for high quality pinot.
2011 'Gum Emperor' Pinot Noir, Jackson Estate, Marlborough
Jackson's stylish single-vineyard wine is unmistakably pinot in style, with dark plum and blackberry fruits and secondary aromas of spice, woodsmoke and 'forest-floor'. Nicely mature, and really very complex - lots of flavour here, with luscious berries, a twist of liquorice, and good texture. Named after the 'Gum Emperor' moth which makes its home on the edge of the vineyard.
2013 'Te Rehua' Pinot Noir, Escarpment, Martinborough
"The most brooding of the Escarpment pinot noirs, this has a dark, mineral nose with graphite and slate, building to earth-crusted herbs, toasted nuts, dark chocolate, glacé orange peel, wet earth and crushed violets. The complexity is deeply integrated. On the palate there's striking clarity and focus, and the tannins are fine-tuned, super-smooth and rippling with energy. They drive long, smooth, clear, while dark-cherry and plum fruit flavors run alongside and wash up through the finish. A classic rendition of pinot in the iron-fist-and-velvet-glove style"
96-97pts, Nick Stock, JamesSuckling.com
