PRODUCT REVIEWS

Rioja wines often feature prominently in wine professionals’ cellars. They are wines that are released ready to drink but can age seemingly forever, especially at the Gran Reserva level. Usually vinified and aged in vanilla and coconut-flavoured American oak, the tempranillo that dominates the blends endows them with seductive, soft textures, rich fruit and depth of flavour with refreshing acidity. Other components in the blend (garnacha, mazuelo, graciano etc.) might bring flesh, or spice, more colour, more acidity – put simply, more character. Finally they usually have a common trait that is particularly tempting - they are amazingly cheap for the quality on offer.

We have put together a selection of the upper echelon of the Rioja quality ladder, three Gran Reservas from some of the oldest (they range between 140 and 170 years old!) and best estates in La Rioja Alta; first-off is the eldest of the three - 170 year-old Bodegas Marqués de Murrieta. A strong contender for the title of best producer in the region, their top cuvée Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial 2010 was just crowned Best Wine of the World by the Wine Spectator – a deserved accolade! Just below this cult cuvée sits the superb Gran Reserva Limited Edition, a wine that delivers much of the thrill of its sibling, for a song. At seven years old the depth of flavour and complexity are very impressive indeed, and it will only get better with a few more years in the bottle.

Second is C.V.N.E’s Imperial Gran Reserva, a modern, richly-fruited and structured Bordeaux-beater of a Rioja, the style of which is tailor-made for the powerful, concentrated fruit of the 2011 vintage. For me this is the best wine of the case to match your Easter roast leg of lamb.

Last but far from least is Bodega Urbina, a Mr.Wheeler favourite for many years now. They hold on to their wines much longer than they have to, and their current release of Gran Reserva is from one of the best vintages of the past 25 years, the fabulous 2004 vintage. At 17 years old it is showing fabulous complexity and harmony of all its elements, with impressive energy. It will age well for years to come but when it is so beautiful right now, why wait!?

2014 Rioja Gran Reserva Limited Edition, Marqués de Murrieta
"The 2014 Gran Reserva Limited Edition, a barrel selection from the Reserva, is a blend of the more age-worthy wines. It's made up of 84% Tempranillo with 9% Graciano, 5% Mazuelo and 2% Garnacha, all from their 300 hectares of estate vineyards. The destemmed and lightly crushed grapes fermented by plot and variety in stainless steel, and the varieties were kept separate throughout the 25 months of élevage in American barriques. When discussing the latest vintages, the 2014 is very curious: the harvest was truly challenging, with lots of rain, ripeness problems and botrytis; so, in principle, it didn't look like a good vintage, and they decided not to keep the red Castillo Ygay. But now, seeing the evolution of this wine, they are kicking themselves. The wine has a clear classical profile, with developed aromas of autumn forest, truffle, smoked cured meat, cigar ash and sweet spices. It's sleek and polished, with resolved, fine-grained tannins and a dry, serious finish. This is surprisingly good and should evolve nicely in bottle. 2020-2030."

2011 Imperial Gran Reserva, CVNE, Rioja
"I'm always looking forward to tasting CVNE's Gran Reserva bottlings, especially the 2011 Imperial Gran Reserva, as the year was highly praised, and I was very curious to see how it behaved. It's a classical blend of Tempranillo with 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo that matured in barrel for two years. It has good depth and complexity in the nose, nicely layered, very balsamic and tertiary. It feels elegant and harmonious. The palate is surprisingly fresh and vibrant, with finesse, freshness, fine and mostly resolved tannins and a fine thread of acidity that holds and lifts up the finish. 2018 - 2028."

2004 Rioja Gran Reserva, Bodegas Urbina
The Gran Reserva bottling comes from slightly better vineyards, according to Ángel Urbina, and has a little more power than some of the bodega's wines. Everything is relative, however, as this is a still an elegant, graceful, savoury wine with haunting balsamic sweetness. drink 2021-25”
