2018 Super-value Red Burgundy Mixed Case
2018 Super-value Red Burgundy Mixed Case
Blue skies, long, warm days, effortless ripening... ‘quality and quantity,’ typically sums up the 2018 season on the Côtes de Nuits, Beaune, Chalonnaise and those beyond. Two words not routinely coupled in any vintage report, of course. But to hear of that year’s bounteous quantity of supreme quality - we thought we’d died and gone to Burgundy.
Rather, to its more hidden, affordable, great-drinking-value outposts. Which accounts for today’s heavenly mixed case offer on opulent, 2018 pinots from Domaine Theulot-Juillot (Mercurey), Domaine Franck Lamargue (Monthelie) and Maison Jaffelin (Pernand-Vergelesses) - an offer well-timed for Mr.Wheeler’s Burgundy En Primeur 2020 campaign kick-off. Three great bottles also to open a window on how the ‘20s will be shaping up in a few years’ time.
In this mixed case, you will receive two bottles each of the following;
2018 Mercurey 1er Cru Champs Martin, Domaine Theulot-Juillot
From Nathalie Theulot’s 12-hectare estate spanning the relatively unsung Côte de Chalonnaise commune of Mercurey, here is a serious Premier Cru red of seriously good value. Fruit character is deep and dark; supple, weighty, rich and silky, it bursts with dark cherry and ripe blackberry on the palate, giving with this a touch of smokiness from 12 months in oak, of which 25% is new. Purity, balance and aromatic precision are all aligned to a well-defined tannic structure, rounding off in saline-streaked, mineral elegance. Drinking beautifully now, it will happily spend the next eight years developing further nuance and complexity.
Pair Theulot-Julliot's 2018 Champs Martin with beef rib steaks, braised lamb or beef joints, roast pork, poultry-based stews and/or soft and aged cheeses and discover what affordable, gratifying, drink-me-now pleasure it holds.
2018 Monthelie Les Gamets, Domaine Franck Lamargue
Monthelie, tucked among Volnay, Auxey-Duresses and Meursault is another bijou-of-a-commune, in this case one for those seeking great-value elegance from the Côte-de-Beaune.
In Franck Lamargue’s ‘Les Gamets’ (a lieu-dit bordering Auxey), there is organically farmed, hand-harvested fruit giving a pure, fresh strawberry and red cherry palate that follows an invigoratingly bright, perfumed nose of violet and ripe, red fruit. With gently integrated oak, there is an equally gentle tannic grip, well balanced acidity, and subtle, persistent spice throughout, making for a hugely enjoyable cuvée. One certainly ready for drinking now, and one to seriously elevate any duck, roast lamb or mushroom-based dishes. Meatier salmon or seared tuna dished will be easily dazzled.
2018 Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru "En Caradeux" Rouge, Maison Jaffelin
Based in the town of Beaune, this ‘smallest of the great Burgundy houses’ continues to show why Mr.Wheeler has been working with them for over a decade. Here, Maison Jaffelin shows Premier Cru prowess in ‘En Caradeux’, an east-facing vineyard looking opposite the Corton hill and planted on the stony, clay and limestone soils in which classically styled pinot thrives. It’s also in the Pernand-Vergelesses commune, one also very much in league with today’s other under-the-radar sources of delicious, affordable red burgundy.
En Caradeux shows a brilliant, luminous ruby hue and displays strawberry, raspberry and violets on the nose. A fine, yet meaty palate is redolent of red berried summer fruits and persistent in violet floral essence. Silky tannins and bright acidity structure a saline-licked finish for an exemplary Premier Cru that delights both authentic terroir expression and the spare notes left in your pocket.
