2000s Claret Fine Wine Mixed Case
Classed Growth claret represents some of winemaking's most impressive and complete expressions of cabernet sauvignon and merlot. Though famously adaptable as varieties around the world, nowhere else on earth can these two noble grape varieties deliver such precision, structure and most importantly - quality - than those achieved in Bordeaux.
Yet for all of these exceptional attributes, it is the structural nature of Bordeaux, the tannic framework and reticent nature of the wines, in youth, which can leave many tasters frustrated. Time is kind to the greatest Bordeaux wines, and in this superb trio of Classed Growths the ageing has already been taken care of, allowing the intrinsic purity and terroir of each wine to speak most eloquently.
A case in point is the 2005 Château Haut-Bergey, Cru Classé Pessac-Léognan; from a vintage which attained one of the highest ever tannin indexes in the region, where for long periods many wines had been overwhelmed by structure, now delivers an intensity of fruit so redolent of this exemplary year.
Switching Banks to Saint Émilion, this time to a small property now under the direction of Château Cheval-Blanc. The generosity on show from 2006 Quinault L'Enclos proves that the best things come to those who wait. Merlot-rich, and offering black cherry fruit laced with cream and cinnamon spice, purity and generosity, it is an absolute delight at age 15.
Finally, possibly the grandest name of all in the trio; Château Batailley, a Classed Growth Pauillac of high regard. It hails from one of the most internationally important wine communes on earth, along with its illustrious neighbours; names such as Mouton-Rothshild, Latour and Lafite. Through consistency and stylistic adaptation over the decades, it has anchored itself as one of the most loved Bordeaux wines in the UK. With well over 10 years under its belt, the 2007 Batailley has become something rather special.
In this mixed case you will receive two each of the following wines;
2005 Château Haut-Bergey, Cru Classé Pessac-Léognan
"One of the finest under-the-radar estates in Pessac-Leognan, Haut-Bergeys 2005 (a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot) offers up aromas of scorched earth, wet stones, burning embers, charcoal, and copious black currant and cherry fruit. The sumptuous bouquet is accompanied by a full-bodied wine displaying dazzling purity, sweet tannin, and a long, opulent finish. This beauty will be drinkable at a relatively early age for a 2005. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025."

2006 Quinault L'Enclos, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé
"An extraordinarily elegant Quinault with remarkable purity and texture has been produced in 2006. This blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc achieved 13.5% natural alcohol, and enjoys every state-of-the-art winemaking technique, most of them Burgundy-inspired (especially the cold pre-fermentation maceration, malolactic in barrel, and aging on its lees with plenty of batonnage). A top-notch success for proprietor Alain Raynaud and his wife, Francoise, this deep ruby/purple-colored effort exhibits sweet aromas of spring flowers, blueberries, and raspberries. Medium-bodied and layered, with attractive sweetness, ripe tannin, a seamless integration of acidity, tannin, and alcohol, and a long finish."

2007 Château Batailley, Cru Classé, Pauillac
"Offers attractive pencil box and cedar scents on the nose, showing more black fruit than the Lynch Moussas, greater sense of purpose. The palate is medium-bodied with fine definition and pleasant weight in the mouth, focused and classic in style that is typical of this estate, and it finishes with satisfying details and persistence. This has long been a strong, perhaps underappreciated performer of the vintage."
