Tuscan Fine Wine Mixed Case
Our fine wine selection this week hails from three magical growers in Tuscany – two with a history dating back many hundreds of years, and one of the true pioneers of the “Super Tuscans”.
The sensational and very well-priced second wine of Sassicaia, Guidalberto; a wine which regularly challenges the lofty scores of its big brother was particularly strong in 2018. It’s a cuvée offered at a fraction of the price of the flagship wine, yet benefits from the same care and selection as applied to the estate's top wine.
The Contucci family has been producing wine in the Montepulciano region since the renaissance, and was one of the founding fathers of Vino Nobile in the 17th century. The wines here are made in a traditional style, and have great presence and class. It was hard to choose between the different Vini Nobile produced here – all are delicious – but the 2014 Pietra Rossa was a standout and is right in its peak drinking window.
Tenuta di Capezzana is located in the historic region of Carmignano, located to the west of Florence is run by the Contini Bonacossi family, the latest in a long history of owners. In fact, in the archives in Florence, they discovered a contract for the rent of vines and olive groves at Capezzana signed in 804 AD. The ‘Villa di Capezzana’ Carmignano is made with 80% sangiovese and 20% cabernet sauvignon and is intense, yet elegant and offers so much for its relatively modest price and a wine that can age easily for 15+ years, with bottles dating back over 100 years in their 300 year old cellars.
In this mixed case you will receive two each of the following wines;
2018 Guidalberto, Tenuta San Guido, Tuscany
A deft and bright blend to serve with a platter of creamy Camembert wedges, the 2018 Guidalberto is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon supplemented with 40% Merlot, showing a smooth and silky delivery of aromas with black fruit and sour cherry backed by spice, pressed flower and tilled earth. These are fragrant and delicate results fitted to a medium-weight finish that is driven by freshness and elegant tannins. 20202030

2016 Carmignano Villa di Capezzana, Tenuta di Capezzana, Tuscany
Made with organic fruit, the 2016 Carmignano Villa di Capezzana is an 80/20 blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is open and accessible, showing a graceful and pure quality of fruit with dark cherry, blackberry, spice, tar and tobacco. The mouthfeel is streamlined and compact, but what this wine lacks in power it makes up for in elegance. This sample from 2016 was sent along with a bottle from 2010 so that I could track its impressive bottle evolution. In fact, I widened my suggested drinking window after tasting that older bottle. 2020-2030

2014 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 'Pietra Rossa', Contucci, Tuscany
A blend of 80% Prugnolo gentile (Sangiovese from Montepulciano), 10% Canaiolo nero, 10% Colorino aged in wood for 30 months, the Pietra Rossa very much caught our eye when we first tasted back in 2018; with its dark, dense texture, exotic perfume, and almost luxurious ripe blackberry palate. From a single vineyard site noted for wines of a more muscular frame, the Pietra Rossa is perhaps the most 'modern' and easy to drink in style with its profound berry fruit. A wine very much coming to its peak, this is joyful from the first glass to the last.
