2017 Rully 1er Cru Rouge, Jean-Marc Pillot
This wine was the standout, 'as-yet-undiscovered' gem from my visit in October with Burgundy growers. Our friend Jean-Marc Pillot in Chassagne-Montrachet served us what he described as 'something different', a red wine from a plot of land in Rully 1er Cru whose fruit he has recently taken on. This wine stopped Ben (our buyer) and me in our tracks. It was much more serious than what we would normally expect from this region; impressive depth and structure, stood up beautifully to the myriad other opulent reds we tasted during the week and could easily age for the next 5 to 7 years if one was able to resist its immediate appeal.
The production of this cuvée is a tiny 25 cases of 12 and we immediately put an option on the entire production for the Mr. Wheeler clients. They should sell quickly so let me know by return if you would like one or more cases.
This is the third of Jean-Marc's impressive reds that I have taken; a few years ago we fell in love with his 2015 Santenay 'Les Champs Claude' and bought his entire production, while his Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos St Jean rouge, is one of my favourite reds in the Côte de Beaune. On top of this, the 1er Cru Champs Cloux vineyard in Rully is a great site, and Jean-Marc is in good company; the de Villaine family of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti fame have owned a plot in this very vineyard since the 1970s.

Where possible, we will use the existing packaging the wine is shipped to us in from the producer. If we feel this is unfit, we will re-pack in a Mr.Wheeler branded, recyclable cardboard carton.

if you don’t like any bottle, for whatever reason, please let us know and we will replace the wine or refund you.
